What's the difference between R-448A and R-449A?
They're competing solutions to the same problem — replacing R-404A. R-448A (Honeywell Solstice N40) is a five-component blend that includes R-1234ze(E) and has a GWP of 1,386; R-449A (Chemours Opteon XP40) is a four-component blend with a GWP of 1,396. Performance and applications overlap almost completely, and the compliance treatment is identical: same 20% commercial refrigeration threshold, same 15-lb applicability floor. Service whichever is on the nameplate — the blends are not interchangeable with each other in a system without a documented change.
Does retrofitting an R-404A rack to R-448A change my compliance obligations?
The obligations continue, with a reset baseline. Both refrigerants are Subpart C-covered, so the appliance stays a tracked appliance throughout.
