Regulatory Status
Mid-GWP HFC/HFO blend (marketed as Opteon™ XP40), one of the two dominant R-404A replacements in commercial refrigeration. Roughly 64% lower GWP than R-404A. Subject to AIM Act phase-down; appliances with ≥15 lbs fall under Subpart C leak-repair.
R-449A and R-448A split the R-404A replacement market between them. At a GWP of 1,396, R-449A consumes about a third of the allowances per pound that R-404A does, keeping it serviceable deep into the phase-down — though like every mostly-HFC blend, it's transitional rather than final.

Should I choose R-449A or R-448A for an R-404A retrofit?
From a compliance standpoint it makes no difference: both are Subpart C-covered blends with the same 20% commercial refrigeration threshold and near-identical GWPs (1,396 vs 1,386). The choice usually comes down to supplier relationships and OEM guidance — R-449A is Chemours' Opteon XP40, R-448A is Honeywell's Solstice N40. Whichever you choose, document the retrofit, redetermine the full charge, and note the §84.106(b) exclusion on the post-retrofit charge.
What is R-449A's GWP?
1,396 by EPA's prescribed method (40 CFR 84.64(b)) — the mass-fraction sum of its constituents: 24.3% R-32 (675) + 24.7% R-125 (3,500) + 25.3% R-1234yf (1) + 25.7% R-134a (1,430) = 1,396.29, rounded to 1,396. Some manufacturer literature cites 1,397 from other GWP tables; the §84.64(b) derivation is the one EPA's rule text prescribes.
Does the chronic-leaker rule matter for smaller R-449A systems?
Yes — arguably more than for large racks. The 125% rule compares a calendar year's total additions against the full charge, and a small system's full charge is a low bar: a 40-lb condensing unit becomes a reportable chronic leaker after just 50 lbs of additions in a year, which two or three bad service calls can reach. Chronic-leaker status means a mandatory report to EPA by March 1 of the following year describing the leaks and repair efforts.
